The goal of this project was to provide the family with a Scandinavian-inspired space to host friends and family throughout the seasons. This addition projects 18’ into the backyard and adds an additional 380 square feet to the home. To conceal the needed structural members, we designed custom arches to adorn the space below the addition. A total of 54 windows and four skylights were installed to bring light and uninterrupted views of the hillside. The interior sills were made from quartz, adding an easily maintainable surface for their window plants. This space can be enjoyed all year long thanks to both a mini spit and radiant in-floor heating installed beneath wood plank tile.
There are two areas that feature heartwood hickory wood tambour; a custom plant-shelf corner, and a modern barn door system that can either expose built-in shelving or a television unit for the families to enjoy games together. All millwork, including door, window and floor mouldings, shelving, and wood slats were milled at a local mill shop to achieve the clients specific design requests. To continue this level of detail and craftsmanship, we added a custom drywall valance to hide the track system of the barn door, rounded bullnose drywall corners, and radius corners for the built-in nooks and ceiling fan mount.
