Description

When architect Chris Manske and his wife Angela set out to find lake property for their dream home, they instead discovered an existing house with untapped potential on a beautiful lakefront site. Rather than building new, they partnered with P.E.A. Builders to reimagine the interior—Chris took the lead in the design, and the team transformed outdated spaces into a cohesive, functional Mid-Century modern retreat. The remodel focused on the kitchen, bathrooms, entry, and main living areas to improve flow, livability, and connection to the lake.
A primary challenge was correcting inefficient circulation. The original foyer opened directly toward the refrigerator, forcing traffic through the kitchen workspace, while the kitchen itself faced away from the lake, limiting views and connection.
The redesigned kitchen now anchors the home. Cabinetry was arranged to create a subtle hallway behind the workspace, improving circulation without sacrificing function. A custom shiplap feature forms a “launch area” to the laundry room, adding organization and visual interest. The new layout allows uninterrupted sightlines from the island through the living room to the lake, strengthening the home’s connection to its setting.
Additional improvements included relocating the dining area from in front of the laundry room to one end of the great room, freeing space for expanded cabinetry and better functionality. A skylight, once centered over the island, now highlights the walkway adjacent to the kitchen, subtly guiding circulation through the space.
Two bathrooms were fully redesigned, including an expanded primary bath. Updates include new fixtures, flooring, and lighting, along with wall-hung walnut cabinetry, slatted wood detailing, and illuminated mirrors that balance style and function.
A major transformation was the shift to a cohesive Mid-Century modern aesthetic. In the kitchen, walnut cabinetry with matched grain, clean profiles, and minimal hardware reinforces the design. The island, finished in a custom color with a quartz waterfall countertop, serves as both workspace and focal point.
The double-sided fireplace was reimagined as a central feature, complemented by custom shiplap, a built-in dry bar, and display shelving. Existing flooring was replaced with site-stained white oak, while new interior doors and custom casing further unify the design.
Lighting selections enhance both ambiance and usability, highlighting architectural features and supporting daily tasks.
This remodel exemplifies P.E.A. Builders’ commitment to collaboration, problem-solving, and craftsmanship. By transforming a dated layout into a cohesive, lake-oriented living environment, the project demonstrates how thoughtful design and precise execution can elevate both beauty and livability.
