Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity

Company Name

Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity

Description

In late summer of 2023, Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity started construction on Habitat Homestead, a 14-home development on 2.66 acres. The land contained no infrastructure, so that all had to be completed before pouring foundations for any of the homes. GGBHFH built 6 townhomes and 8 single-family homes, which now provide safe, adequate, permanent housing for the individuals and families who purchased these homes. Homes are purchased with a 0% interest mortgage loan and home buyers make monthly payments set at about 28–30% of their gross income. The homes are also constructed using energy-efficient appliances to help save homeowners on monthly utility costs.

GGBHFH collaborated with Encompass Childcare, who previously owned the land where Habitat Homestead is being built. They worked with Encompass’s Board of Directors to come to a mutually beneficial agreement to purchase the land for the development. GGBHFH also worked with the city of Green Bay, their engineers, and architects to create the plan for the subdivision. Then, throughout 2024 and 2025, Site Managers, contractors, and volunteers built the homes. This “mass” construction method of building maximized the use of labor and supplies while helping GGBHFH to work quicker to meet the ever-increasing demand for affordable housing.

While not a typical entry for an award like this, Habitat Homestead should be considered due to the innovation required to construct a cohesive neighborhood development efficiently, affordably, and with mostly volunteer labor.
