Description

Originally designed by Edgar Tafel, a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright, we approached this kitchen remodel with a focus on honoring the home’s architectural roots while introducing functionality in a contemporary manner.
The layout was refined to improve flow and efficiency, with a highly functional perimeter workspace and seamless appliance integration. A central butcher block island anchors the space, adding a clean warmth and serving as a natural gathering point for family and friends.
The perimeter features suede quartzite countertops, selected for their durability and subtle movement. A full-height matte porcelain backsplash extends across the main wall, with its bold veining carefully aligned to create a continuous visual flow and a strong architectural statement. Upper cabinetry was intentionally minimized to maintain openness and reinforce horizontal lines. A glass-front storage cabinet provides accessible space for dishware and other miscellaneous kitchen items. Select existing cabinetry was recycled to honor the home’s original look and was preserved and integrated into the new design.
The result is a kitchen that feels purposeful. Layout and materials, bolstered by artisan-level execution, work in harmony to elevate everyday use by the homeowner. It is a space defined not only by how it looks, but by how it seamlessly functions for the retired professional chef who now calls this space home.
